There are two locally famous pubs in Stevenage. The first was the ‘Edward the Confessor’ pub, unfortunately now closed, which may have been connected to the building of the St Mary’s Church in neighbouring Walken, and is named after the King who ruled between 1042 until his demise in 1066. The other is ‘Our Mutual Friend’ in Shephall, which became the title of one of Charles Dickens’ tales. Dickens liked to stay in nearby Knebworth House and knew Stevenage very well. Another author Edward Morgan Forster, who wrote the novel Howard’s End, also lived in Stevenage for a time and there is now a monument here in his memory; it was nearby Rooksnest that was the inspiration for the setting in the book.
