Just over the road from Domino’s St Helens you’ll see a British Film Institute Plaque on the wall of number 57, the birthplace of George Groves, Hollywood's first ‘sound man’ as recording engineer on the first talkie The Jazz Singer. The motto on St Helen’s coat of arms, Ex Terra Lucem (‘From the Ground, Light’) tells you what put this town on the map - coal. Without it Pilkington Glass could not have started here back in 1826. Chemist Thomas Beecham started another dynasty; in 1859 his factory in St Helen’s started producing Beecham’s Pills. His grandson was the great conductor Sir Thomas Beecham. Not as musical is comedian and local boy Johnny Vegas, a huge fan of St Helen’s Rugby League team.
