Reading is a large town in the south east of England. It has many literary connections and has been immortalised in fiction many times. Oscar Wilde was jailed here and whilst ‘inside’ wrote the 1908 poem The Ballad of Reading Gaol about the notorious Reading born soldier and murderer Charles Thomas Wooldridge. The town also appeared in Thomas Hardy’s 1895 novel Jude the Obscure under the guise of Aldbrickham; unfortunately he doesn’t paint a very good picture. Even Charles Dickens had something to say about the town and Esther Summerson in Bleak House was said have gone to school here. Charles Dickens was asked to stand for the MP of Reading: he turned down the offer.
