Cosham lies within the city boundaries of North Portsmouth and its name is thought to be of Saxon origin, meaning “Cossa’s homestead”. Some of the suburb’s oldest houses date back to 1777, though only a few now remain. It is also mentioned in the Doomsday book of 1086, the survey of England commissioned by William the Conqueror. The book chronicled land, livestock and their owners in the year 1086, and provide a fascinating insight into the country’s economic state in medieval times. That Cosham was included shows that the village was an important regional centre of the time.
