The famous university town of Oxford is in the south east of England on the banks of the River Thames, although this portion of the river is known as The Isis. The university is the oldest university in the English-speaking world and many notable people have lived in Oxford as a result. World famous Irish born wit and writer Oscar Wilde, for example, attended the university from 1874 to 1878. Oxford has also been fictionalised repeatedly: in Thomas Hardy’s Jude the Obscure, Jude moves to Christchurch in disguise and Lyra in Phillip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy starts her adventure in an alternative version of the city.
