Warwickshire’s largest town, Nuneaton is well known as the birthplace of writer Mary Ann Evans - better known as George Eliot. Born in the 19th century, Eliot was raised in the town and her novels were frequently set in and around Nuneaton. Many women were not taken seriously as writers in the 19th Century, which lead to her using a male pen name. Such places featured in her work include: Tramsome Court (in real life-Stoneleigh Abbey), the town of Milby (based on Nuneaton), and the Red Lion, which is now the George Eliot Hotel.
