For centuries Bletchley was a sleepy little place on the road from Fenny Stratford to Buckingham. With the arrival of the London and North Western Railway in 1845 and its connection with the Oxford-Cambridge ""Varsity Line"" shortly afterwards, Bletchley grew rapidly. Then Bletchley was included in the ""designated area"" of the New City of Milton Keynes in 1967, and the population boomed. The town thrived in the early years as the main shopping area for Milton Keynes and the surrounding area. Of course, the town is famous for Bletchley Park, the place where codes were cracked during the Second World War. Today locals can enjoy walks by the Blue Lagoon Nature Reserve, the River Ouzel and the Grand Union Canal.
