Nestled on the banks of the River Medway, Maidstone was the agricultural centre of Kent. Inhabited since the Stone Age, it was later a favourite of the Romans, remains belonging to villas have been found throughout the surrounding area along with evidence of roads and a town. During Norman times there was a college for priests and hospitals at Boxley abbey. Even in medieval times it was popular, with Peneden Heath being a much-used execution site. In the 19th century a dinosaur, called an iguanodon, was found nearby and is now on display in the Natural History Museum. The famous artist and children’s television presenter Tony Hart was born here.
