It is believed that Morden, in the London Borough of Merton, received its name from the old Welsh words ‘Mawr’ and ‘Dun’ which mean ‘large fort’. Human activity here dates date to pre-history when Celtic tribes lived in the area. Amongst the famous people that have lived here in more recent times is Admiral Mariot Arbuthnot who commanded the Royal Navy in North America during the War for Independence. Unfortunately he rose to the rank seemingly by chance and had little idea of the complexities of naval tactics, as demonstrated by his blundering leadership during the Battle of Cape Henry, which resulted in victory over the French more through luck than judgement.
