Kingston-upon-Thames is in the Royal Borough of Kingston in the south-west of London. Outside of the town’s Guildhall is the ‘Coronation Stone’ and it is here that Saxon kings were supposedly crowned. Because of this it is believed that Kingston means ‘farmstead of the Kings’. It has maintained a regal aspect throughout its life with a Royal Charter granted in 1208 by King John, in 1481 by King Edward IV and in more recent times by Queen Elizabeth II, in 1965. In the town centre are a number of disused red phone boxes lined and tilted like falling dominos (a 1988 sculpture by David Mack) and nearby is the Toilet Gallery, a minimalist art gallery in an old public toilet.
