Foley Street, West London is named after Lord Foley who was connected to the Harley family by marriage; the Harley family lend there name to another famous London street. English dramatist and civil servant Richard Cumberland lived along this road; throughout his life he tried his hand at writing comedies, musicals and tragedies. His first play The West Indian is said to be a fine example of early modern drama and is about a young libertine scapegrace back from the tropics with ‘rum and sugar enough…to make all the water in the Thames to turn to punch’. Irish-born 18th century Shakespearean scholar and critic Edmund Malone also lived on the street. Bob Dylan also made his London debut here at the King & Queen Pub.
