Docklands is the semi-official name for the area, formerly part of the Docks of London, in the east of the city. In 1982 there was the designation of an ‘Enterprise Zone’ that helped establish the development of the now iconic Canary Wharf, which has the three tallest buildings in the UK, and is centred on the old West India Docks. The docks themselves have a history leading back into the distant past. Charles Dickens often used the docks in his novels, including both Our Mutual Friend and Great Expectations. Joseph Conrad provides a memorable description in The Mirror of the Sea when he notes that amongst the wicked and pig-headed ships there were ‘quiet, and serene nooks in the busy world of the docks.’
