Set on the banks of the River Crane, Cranford is traditionally known as the ‘prettiest village in Middlesex’. Prior to the Norman conquest, the village was a small Saxon settlement and later belonged in part to the Knights Templar. One of Cranford’s most famous residents was the 19th century MP George Berkley, who spent his childhood years on his family’s Cranford Estate. One day George was riding over Hounslow Heath and was accosted by a highwayman. Old George shouted, ‘you cowardly dog, do you think that I can’t see your confederate skulking behind you?’ The highwayman, having no confederate, turned around and was promptly shot in the back!
