The city of Lisburn, sits to the south-west of Belfast. Its name means ‘fort of the gamblers’, but the town later became better known as the birthplace of the Irish linen industry. Established in 1698 by Louis Crommelin, a Huguenot weaver (among others), the industry is celebrated at the Irish Linen Centre and Lisburn Museum, which collects and preserves information and artefacts relating to linen production through the ages. This impressive collection consists of artefacts relating to Irish linen, textiles and photographic and archaeological finds.
