Here are some fascinating Leicester firsts: Leicester was the first BBC local radio station to open, in November 1967, and the first local radio jingle. The city was the first to have both traffic wardens and traffic lights - Leicester is supposed to have more traffic lights than any other UK city. Leicester had the first Space Shuttle Simulator outside the USA (at the National Space and Science Centre) and had first package holidays arranged by Thomas Cook from Leicester station (not currently offering holidays in space – yet.) Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester set up the first directly elected parliament in 1265 and Lady Jane Grey, born at Bradgate Park, was England’s first female monarch.
