Located between Glasgow and Ayr, Kilmarnock is the largest town in East Ayrshire. Through the east of the town runs the River Irvine before joining with the Firth of Clyde and heading to meet the sea. Burns’ Mall in the town's centre is named after the famous Scottish poet Robert Burns, whose first book of poetry was also published here. The book's first edition, published in 1786 and called Poems, chiefly in the Scottish dialect, is now even known as the Kilmarnock Edition. It has been claimed that Kilmarnock was also the birthplace of Scottish knight, landowner and patriot William Wallace – a claim that is looking increasingly likely in the light of current evidence.
