In 1110AD when Matilda, wife of Henry I, fell into the River Lea she may have been spotted by locals of nearby Hoddesdon. Between Cambridge and London, Hoddesdon became popular in the 1800s as a stop off between these two large cities when more when 35 coaches a day would call here. Perhaps, because of its use as a resting place, there are an unusually large number of Inns, and brewing became a big thing. Hops were carried up and down the roadways and Hoddesdon even had a hops market. In later years the river became more popular for transporting the hops so the market gave way to a Wednesday Meat Market which continues to this day.
