Old Hatfield grew up around the gates of Hatfield House and here you will find a pub called ‘The Eight Bells Inn’. This Inn was described in Charles Dickens’ ‘Oliver Twist’ as a hiding place for the murderous Bill Sykes. Now ‘Old Hatfield’ is the historic centre of this Hertfordshire town. The first passenger jetliner, known as the De Havilland Comet, was built here and the low-winged monoplane, with four monstrous engines, first flew in 1949. Another high-flying creation of Hatfield was the 70’s rock band Babe Ruth whose first album, called appropriately ‘First Album’ went gold in Canada in 1973. Guitarist Bernie Marsden later joined melodic hard rock band, Whitesnake.
