The County Durham town of Hartlepool is a North East England sea port and location of one of the most fascinating sites of Special Scientific Interest in the UK. Hartlepool Submerged Forest is an area of forest stretching along the coast, which became submerged about 7,000 years ago. Many remains, tools and implements have been found and provide important information about sea level and environmental changes, including supportive evidence that there were deer, stags and human activity in the coastal forest many years ago.
