It is thought that the name Greenock comes from the Gaelic 'Grianaig' meaning a 'sunny place'. In 1592, when it was founded, it was little more than a fishing village but quickly grew into a working port, trading with the Americas and the Caribbean. The second Darien Scheme was launched from the port in the 1690's, and a fleet sent to the Panama to establish a Scottish Colony. Like the first Darien Scheme, the second was a disaster: the Scottish colonists, unused to extreme heat and ravaged by tropical disease, died at a rate of around 10 a day. To make things worse, the English refused to help, claiming to be afraid of the Spanish Empire.
