Originally Baillieston was a small village that grew out of a three small hamlets: Crosshill, Barrachnie and Bredisholm, all settlements that had grown out of the weaving industry that thrived in the area in the late 18th century. Later, with the development of the Monksfield Coalmine, Baillieston became a typical mining village. As use of the pits declined in the early 20th century, and with the development of a tram system, Baillieston slowly evolved into its current form. Labour politician John Wheatley, who was a party member in 1920's, was born here; he is responsible for the 1924 Housing Act that improved the lives of millions of working class people throughout the UK.
