Crawley is a market town to the south of London and north of Brighton and Hove. It is also extremely old. There have been people settled here since the Stone Age and manufactured flints have been found in the vicinity. The town was important to the Romans and as the centre for iron making, huge furnaces were built here. The name Crawley comes from the Saxon Crow’s Leah, which means a crow-infested clearing. There is a plaque outside the local George’s Hotel commemorating Mark Lennon the first editor of the satirical Punch magazine, which is something of an institution. On a more grisly note, John George Haigh, the ‘Acid Bath Murderer’, carried out some of his gruesome killings here.
