The Roman capital of England, Colchester is a beautiful, historic town in Essex. Locals like to think of it as the ‘oldest town in Britain’; it is certainly the oldest recorded Roman town and is believed to have the oldest market. Just to the northwest of London this town has an impressive 11th century Norman Keep, or castle, practically rising from its centre. Amazingly Colchester is also the birthplace of three famous nursery rhymes: ‘Old King Cole’, ‘Humpty Dumpty’ and ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star’. Margaret Thatcher worked as a research chemist here in the 40’s and more recently singer Damon Albarn, from Blur was born here.
