As home to the Royal Ordnance Factory, Chorley played a significant role during World War II. Its factory at nearby Euxton employed over 40,000 people and is where the Bouncing bomb was built. Chorley’s roots lie in mining and the textile industry. Local boy and former Captain of England and the British Lions rugby teams, Bill Beaumont continues the tradition started five generations ago when his great, great grandfather Joseph Hargreaves set up a small weaving shed in 1888. Bill now runs the business as Bill Beaumont Textiles. Other famous locals include English sugar merchant and founder of the Tate gallery Sir Henry Tate and Ken Morley (Reg Holdsworth in Coronation Street.)
