The seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Primate of All England, and head of the Church of England worldwide, Canterbury Cathedral is one of the oldest and most impressive in the country and traces its history back as far as 597AD. Geoffrey Chaucer made Canterbury the starting place for the pilgrims in his 14th century masterpiece, The Canterbury Tales an epic tale of love, treachery and avarice. Christopher Marlow, the Elizabethan tragedian and author of Doctor Faustus was born here in 1564. Marlow himself is the subject of legend and is reputed to have been a spy, a 'rakehell', a dualist and above all a notorious 'tabacco-user'.
