Burnley, which means ‘meadow by the River Brun’, nestles at the confluence of the River Calder and River Brun. The arrival of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in 1796 launched this prosperous market town into the Industrial Revolution. The canal passes above the town on a 60ft high embankment known as the 'Straight Mile', regarded as one of the ‘Seven Wonders of the British Canal System’. Brooding imposingly to the north west of the town is Pendle Hill, home of the Pendle Witches immortalised in Robert Neill’s book Mist Over Pendle. These days the magic comes from local boy Sir Ian McKellen, who played Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings.
