Bromborough is thought to be the site of the epic Battle of Brunanburh, which took place in 937 confirming England as an Anglo-Saxon kingdom. During the 19th century this medieval market town benefited from the arrival of two major manufacturers. Price’s Candles and soap makers Lever Brothers relocated their factories and workers to the nearby marshland of the Wirral Peninsula, opposite Liverpool where the oils and fats needed for making candles and soap were unloaded. Price’s built its ‘industrial’ village Bromborough Pool in 1854. In 1888 Lever Brothers built a factory and garden village for their workers at Port Sunlight on the other side of Bromborough Pool. Both villages are now conservation areas.
