Even though these days Yardley nestles in the less rural landscape of Birmingham’s outer edge, it still retains a strong village identity. A large part of old Yardley was given conservation status in 1969, becoming Birmingham's first conservation area. Within this area is the Grade 1 listed 13th century church of St Edburgha's. One of its doorways is beautifully decorated with Tudor roses and a pomegranate, commemorating the ill-fated marriage of Henry VIII’s brother Prince Arthur, to Catherine of Aragon. That’s not Yardley’s only Tudor treasure; Blakesley Hall, one of the oldest buildings in Birmingham, was built for aspiring yeoman farmer Richard Smalbroke in 1590.
