The word 'Rubery' comes from the Old English word 'rowbery' meaning 'a rough hill'. The original village was once situated along an important salt road to Droitwich where vast deposits of salt were mined since Roman times. Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII’s second wife, stayed for some time at Rubery Manor (which used to be in Waseley but is now long gone). Buffalo Bill together with four Native Americans once stayed at ‘The New Rose and Crown’. Beacon Hill gets the name from the fact that beacons were lit in times of national danger. It was part of a network that could send warnings quickly from one end of the country to another.
