J.R.R. Tolkien lived in Edgbaston during his teenage years and the two towers of Edgbaston, Perrott's Folly and the Waterworks Tower, are said to have provided inspiration for the towers in The Lord of the Rings. Both Neville Chamberlain, British Prime Minister from 1937 to 1940, and George Cadbury, who developed Bourneville, were born in Edgbaston. In the early 19th Century Edgbaston Hall hosted meetings of the exclusive ‘Lunar Society’ – so called because they only met at full moons. Of course, there’s always the famous cricket ground too, but that’s another story.
