Banbury sits on the border of Oxfordshire, near to both Northamptonshire and Warwickshire. The town is famed for its Banbury Cakes and for the nursery rhyme “Ride a cock horse to Banbury cross”. The current Banbury Cross was erected in 1859 to commemorate the daughter of Queen Victoria’s marriage. It stands at fifty-two feet and six inches topped by a gold cross and with typical gothic features. Until this addition, Banbury stood had no cross for 250 years, after the original cross was destroyed in 1600 by a group of Puritans, who believed in a personal relationship with God rather than worship through a specific place or clergy.
