Abingdon, now in Oxfordshire, was once the county town of Berkshire. In the Middle Ages, it was a prosperous agricultural town famous for its weaving and clothing industries but after the dissolution of Abingdon Abbey in 1538 the town fell on hard times. Abingdon’s fortunes were revived in the 1800s when the town was linked first to the country’s canal network and then with Brunel’s Great Western Railway. A tradition in Abingdon sees local dignitaries throwing buns from the roof of the Museum into the Market Square on special days (such as royal marriages). The Museum even has a collection of buns, dried and varnished, dating back to bun throwings of the 19th century.
