The industrial town of Aberdare is located in the district of Glamorgan, South Wales, 24 miles north west of Cardiff. Thanks to the abundance of coal and iron ore in the area, the town of Aberdare grew rapidly in the 19th century from a small village to a major town. Iron works were established around the area between 1799 and 1800, although these were later overshadowed by the coal mining industry, which in turn fuelled the growth of steam railways and steam ships. Famous residents include the founding members of the popular band Stereophonics, who came from a nearby village, and Second World War poet Alun Lewis who was born in Aberdare itself.
