It was the Victorian passion for healthy seaside breaks that led to Worthing’s rapid development. Its agreeable climate and location between the South Downs and the English Channel are major factors in its growth. Notable landmarks include award-winning Worthing Pier built in 1862 and the Dome Cinema, opened in 1911 and one of the oldest working cinemas in Britain. Castle Goring a Grade 1 listed country house completed in 1798 is widely considered Worthing's most architecturally important building. In 1884 Oscar Wilde wrote The Importance of Being Earnest while staying in Worthing.
