Weymouth is a popular seaside resort 8 miles south of Dorchester. Its history and character have been inextricably related to the sea, with emigrants leaving to colonise the Americas and King George III making Weymouth his summer holiday residence between 1789 and 1805. In the Second World War over half a million American troops embarked from Weymouth to fight at the Battle of Normandy. It lies half way along the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site on the Dorset and east Devon coast, important for its geology and landforms. Nearby Portland harbour will host the 2012 Olympic sailing events.
