Although the origins of the name Potters Bar are lost in time it seems highly likely that there was a Roman pottery built here. Alternatively the town may have been named after Geoffrey le Pottere who lived nearby in 1294. Even though it was located on the Great North Road (the 18th and 19th century equivalent to the M1) Potters Bar was relatively small up until the mid-1800s when arrival of the Great Northern Railway caused a population explosion. Nearby is Oakmere House where a WWI zeppelin crashed in 1916. After WWII the area was developed even further and in 1980 less that 3% of the buildings standing dated further than 1914. Famous Jazz musicians James Carter and Terry Lightfoot both lived here.
