The name of the town dates back many centuries and refers to land owned in the 1100s by a Flemish entrepreneur called De Leving. He was granted land in the area and built a fortified tower (now long gone). The settlement that grew up became known as ‘Levingstoun’. Until the early 1960s the area surrounding the ancient village was open farmland, then in 1962 it was designated a ‘new town’. Since then the town has prospered and Livingston is today the second largest settlement in the Lothians after Edinburgh. Livingston is full of local attractions, including Almond Valley and the Scottish Self Build Centre. The town also has great shopping facilities and active sports clubs, such as Livingston F.C and Livingston Rugby Football Club.
