Kingswood is now seen as a suburb of Bristol but is a place of historical interest itself. The Royal fir and oak forest that lends the place its name used to stretch for miles but over the years has grown smaller. Originally it was the domain of the Saxon kings who set up encampments in nearby Pucklechurch. Hunting was banned by royal decree but poaching was rife and marauding gangs of thieves hid out in the woods. After the neighbouring castle was demolished in 1656 things got so bad that hoards of lawless rioters and robbers centred on Cockroad were referred to as 'savages' and were rounded up.
