The West End of Glasgow is the city's Bohemian centre, with many boutique shops and upmarket cafes. It is also the home to Glasgow University and the Glasgow Botanical Gardens. Glasgow University’s spire was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, a Victorian architect famed for building churches, cathedrals and workhouses, and is the second largest gothic revival building in Britain. The University itself is the fourth oldest in the English-speaking world. Unsurprisingly, many of the West End’s inhabitants are students, which helps add to the vibrant atmosphere. This area is also home to the annual West End Festival, Glasgow's largest and most popular event.
