Battlefield is situated on the south side of the River Clyde in Glasgow. It earned its dramatic name from The Battle of Langside, which took place here in 1568. The battle effectively grew from a family argument, albeit the Scottish Royal family of the time. In 1567 Mary Queen of Scots was forced to abdicate in favour of her infant son King James VI and was imprisoned in Loch Leven Castle. The following year she escaped and, determined to regain her throne, rapidly assembled an army of supporters. Her army marched to Langside and fell into a bloodthirsty battle with supporters of the infant King. Mary escaped and left for England, never to set foot in Scotland again.
