Close to Bournemouth, Ferndown is surrounded by heath lands including Holt Heath, with its locally renowned woodlands and ancient burial sites. The origin of the name Ferndown is somewhat obscure but people believe that it derives from the Anglo-Saxon word ‘fiergen’, which means ‘wooded hill’. Nowadays the town has grown considerably but still manages to maintain a quaint country atmosphere and remains a peaceful place to visit; many of the locals still refer to the town as a ‘village’. Surprisingly Ferndown had its own zoo until the ‘50’s with Ajax the Lion being a major attraction. Rumour has it that Ajax was wormed on Fridays and then left unfed until Saturday evening so that he would roar at the visitors.
