There has been a settlement at Fareham since Roman times with many historic buildings surviving to this day. There is documented evidence in existence that dates this lively market town back to Norman times when it was known as Ferneham. Recently the town has been extensively developed and is now a popular retail area with 15% of the population employed in this sector. The inventor of wrought iron, Henry Cort, was born and lived in Fareham from 1740 to 1800. An ‘iron sculpture park’, supposedly the largest in Europe, has been built in the town centre to celebrate his work.
