Falkirk is in central Scotland, with Edinburgh to the northeast, and Glasgow in the northwest. In the 18th and 19th century the town was the centre of the iron and steel industry, with the Forth and Clyde Canal and the Union Canal (which meet at Falkirk) being instrumental in the metals' transport. Falkirk is also famous for the Battle of Falkirk during which King Edward I defeated William Wallace. Falkirk is the only settlement in the UK to have a name in four different languages. It was known as Egglesbreth in Old English; Falkirk in Scots; La Chapelle de Fayerie in French; and Eaglais Bhreach in Scottish Gaelic. Falkirk is also the home to Scotland's national street arts festival, Big In Falkirk.
