Erith is a town to the south east of London on the banks of the River Thames. The town stands on what, in days gone by, would have been a vast forest of oak, yew and alder. There has been a settlement here since pre-historic times and by the first century it had grown considerably. Erith owes its continued prosperity to the River Thames; during his reign King Henry VIII opened a naval dockyard here, which shows just how important the town was at the time. The inventor Edward Butler lived in Erith and invented a three-wheeled car called the Butler Petrol Cycle in 1884, considered by many to be the first British car.
