While there has always been a village called East Leah in the area, the railway town Eastleigh is fairly new (in name at least). The railway station here was called Bishopstoke Junction until it was renamed Eastleigh in 1923. However the town here has thrived and during a recent Channel 4 documentary was named as the 9th best place to live in the UK. As you enter the town you will be hard pressed to miss the famous Spitfire replica on the roundabout near the airport. Slapstick comedian Benny Hill (reputedly a big favourite with legendary Charlie Chaplin) was born here and to honour his memory there is now a Benny Hill Close.
