Bournemouth has always been popular with visitors and certainly caught Thomas Hardy's eye when he decided to have Tess from his famous novel live here whilst giving the town the assumed name of Sandbourne. According to popular legend a small band of Russians set up a colony here, one of who was Tolstoy. The Royal Bath Hotel has attracted luminaries as diverse as H G Wells and Dame Shirley Bassey. With its strong literary connections the town also holds an annual Literary Festival. Bournemouth University is in the neighbouring town of Poole but has a campus here attracting thousand of international students.
