Ashford has been a market town for centuries and the market here is still one of the most important in England. Although its name is quite common, meaning a ford near a clump of Ash trees, this hub for the local community is unique. Cade, who led a popular revolt against King Henry VI, is said to have come from here by none other than Shakespeare in his 'War of the Roses' play 'Henry VI Part 2'. For a small town Ashford has had its fair share of famous residents including Kate Bush who went to school here. Thriller writer Frederick Forsyth, of 'Day of the Jackal' fame, was also born here.
