This Cheshire market town, 8 miles from Manchester, was granted a Royal Charter in 1290 by Edward I to hold a Tuesday market and the annual Altrincham or St James’ Fair, which ran for over 600 years. By the 17th century Altrincham was a thriving coaching town servicing the busy Manchester to Chester turnpike. The advent of the industrial revolution gave a boost to its market gardens and the Altrincham Carrot, Timperley Early rhubarb and Bowden Down potato were taken via the local Bridgewater Canal into the heart of Manchester. It’s easy to see why the wealthy and famous of Manchester, both past and present set up home here.
